The Nipa Hut
In this project, we, the researchers, are to merge our ideas to designate on spectacular combinations of our thoughts and knowledge, coming up to an introduction on one of the most precious and treasured wonder of art in our very own country, the ‘nipa hut’. The nipa hut, commonly referred to as “bahay kubo”, is an indigenous house used in the Philippines. The native house has traditionally been constructed with bamboo tied together and covered with a thatched roof using nipa/anahaw leaves. . The Nipa hut is the national house of the Philippines. Nipa huts were the native houses of the indigenous people of the Philippines before the Spaniards arrived. They are still used today, especially in rural areas. They work well as shelter from average wind and rain. Different architectural designs are present among the different ethno linguistic groups in the country, although all of them conform to being stilt houses, similar to those found in neighboring countries such as Indonesia, Malaysia, and other countries of Southeast Asia.
A nipa hut is an icon of Philippine culture as it represents the Filipino value of bayanihan, which refers to a spirit of communal unity or effort to achieve a particular objective. This very creative, artistic and wonderful art, manifesting our culture is uniquely eye-catching. It is truly a pride of the Filipinos, for it is a bridge connecting and representing the beauty of art in its simplest form here in the Philippines. “Simplicity is Beauty” indeed. For in this scenic indigenous house can you experience the true meaning of calmness, relaxation, silence and a very simple lifestyle. The Nipa Hut is considered as one of the Philippines' cozy and pleasurable places to relax. It is widely used in the Philippine resorts and has an airy surroundings. One reason why most of the foreigners who stayed here in the Philippines prefer nipa huts on the seasides rather than choosing concrete structures is because its comfortable and more relaxing in the inside. It is an extraordinary place where one may erase for a moment the obstacles to his happiness. Letting the calm wind rest with you, forgetting the existence of gadgets and keeping our eyebrows away from each other, these are to redefine ‘reality’. This treasured art of the Filipinos is a delight to one’s eyes and deserves our attention.
